Building Better Futures: Celebrating Resilience and Change for Workplace Inclusion

On the occasion of International Labour Day, the International Labour Organization (ILO), Bangladesh Business and Disability Network (BBDN), and Bonhishikha jointly hosted an impactful event titled “Building Better Futures: Celebrating Voices of Resilience and Change for Workplace Inclusion” on May 5, 2025, at BCFCC, Agargaon, Dhaka. The event aimed to shine a spotlight on inclusion, labour rights, and equal opportunities for marginalized communities, bringing together policymakers, employers, and marginalized voices under one roof.

The event was graced by the presence and insightful remarks of prominent figures, including Brigadier General (Retd.) Dr. M Sakhawat Hussain, Honorable Adviser to the Ministry of Labour and Employment; Ms. Sharmeen S. Murshid, Honourable Adviser to the Ministry of Social Welfare as well as Ministry of Women and Children Affairs; Mr. Tuomo Poutiainen, Country Director of ILO; Mr. A H M Shafiquzzaman, Secretary of the Ministry of Labour and Employment; and; Mr. Badal Khan, Chairman of the National Coordination Committee for Workers’ Education (NCCWE); Mr. Tahmid Ahmed, Vice President of the Bangladesh Employers’ Federation (BEF); and Mr. Syed Nasim Manzur, Managing Director, Apex Footwear Ltd.

Stories of Strength and Resilience

A highlight of the event was the session titled “Success Stories Against the Odds,” where individuals from various socio economic demographics shared their journeys of overcoming barriers in the workplace. Mr. Rokibul Islam, a youth with a physical disability who secured a job at Le Méridien Dhaka through ILO ProGRESS Project and BBDN, spoke about his transition into formal employment and the significance of inclusive hiring practices. His story underscored the transformative power of inclusive workplaces in empowering marginalized communities to thrive.

Navigating the Skills Gap

During the Face-to-Face Dialogue: Tackling the Skills Gap for a More Inclusive Future, Mr. Nayem Molla, Communications and Admin Officer at BBDN, joined in a conversation between youth, HR personnel working in various national and international organizations. Nayem spoke about the critical barriers persons with disabilities face after completing their education as well as highlighted practical steps employers can take, such as regular sensitization, inclusive team practices, and using assistive technologies to unlock potential.

Confronting Workplace Inequality

The panel discussion on “Fundamental Rights at Work” brought critical issues to the forefront, including workplace safety, harassment, and discrimination. Ms. Sadaf Saaz Siddiqi, Trustee of BBDN, addressed the audience, emphasizing the importance of enforcing fundamental labour rights to create equitable and dignified workplaces for all.

Empowering Entrepreneurs with Disabilities

BBDN facilitated four stalls during the event, with two of them showcasing the products and achievements of entrepreneurs with disabilities, while the remaining two featured the work of Organizations of Persons with Disabilities (OPDs). These stalls not only spotlighted the talent and resilience of persons with disabilities but also emphasized the urgent need for inclusive business practices in Bangladesh.

Career Building Workshop and Closing Remarks

The event concluded with a Career Building Workshop, offering practical guidance to youth, women, and marginalized communities on advancing their careers in a competitive job market.

In her vote of thanks, Ms. Aziza Ahmed, Director Operations at BBDN, expressed her appreciation to all speakers, partners, and participants for their active engagement and commitment to creating a more inclusive labour market.

A Step Towards Inclusive Workplaces

As the event concluded, one key message resonated throughout: Inclusion is not just a goal it is a fundamental right that must be embedded in every workplace, every policy, and every opportunity.
