RETURN TO WORK AND REHABILITATION STRATEGY

RETURN TO WORK AND REHABILITATION STRATEGY ‐ A NEW INITIATIVE BY BANGLADESH EMPLOYERS’ FEDERATION AND BANGLADESH BUSINESS & DISABILITY NETWORK
Bangladesh Employers’ Federation (BEF) and Bangladesh Business & Disability Network (BBDN), in association with Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, organized a stakeholder consultation workshop on drafting a strategy on “Return to Work and Rehabilitation” for injured workers. This initiative is supported by the GIZ while necessary technical support is provided by the International Labour Organization (ILO). Under the initiative, a possible strategy will be developed to up‐skill and re‐skill the injured workers after any industrial accident following their treatment and subsequent functional recovery.

After the Rana Plaza incident, government, employers, workers, development partners and all other relevant stakeholders have taken required initiatives to prevent and minimize industrial accidents. This initiative is a continuation of the process. Taking the experience of the Rana Plaza accident, this new initiative of return to work and rehabilitation has been initiated.

Once the strategy is adopted, the injured workers will be given necessary training in order to facilitate their return to work in the same or different industry in similar or equivalent positions as appropriate. During the implementation of this strategy, some of the existing laws and
regulations might require to be amended and updated.

The workshop was attended by representatives from workers, employers, government and civil society organizations, particularly those working with rehabilitation and people with disabilities. The participants gave important inputs which will be incorporated while formulating the
strategy.

Mr. Murteza R. Khan, CEO, BBDN made the introductory remarks while Dr. Silvia Popp, Project Manager, EIPS, GIZ introduced the project. Mr. Shaquib Quoreshi, external consultant, gave the keynote presentation. Mr. Farooq Ahmed, Secretary‐General, BEF facilitated the open
discussion session.

Mr. A.K.M. Mizanur Rahman, Director General, Department of Labour attended the event as the Chief Guest and addressed the participants. All the participants unanimously agreed that developing a strategy on return to work and rehabilitation will be beneficial for the industries in
the country.
